Horsehair Necklace

Maybe it's just me, but do I associate horsehair with fashion accessory? Neigh!

But that's exactly what San Francisco artist Elizabeth Prost did, and did very well. She turned horsehair (humanely) into a fabulous necklace with just a little bit of leather and silver hardware: http://shopbigthings.bigcartel.com/product/horsehair-necklaces-by-elizabeth-prost - via Teenangster

I think they got the idea from 1800's Victorian Mourning jewelry.. when a loved one would die, they would sometimes make jewelry out of the deceased person's hair. Some of the pieces looked like that, but some would would artistically arrange the hair within a glass pendant.. Pretty neat stuff regardless :)

This is a nice discussion. There is a jewelry artist who makes only horse hair jewelry at Solenaro Designs www.solenarodesigns.com that probobly has the most interestingly original pieces. I've seen Cornejo in NY and always thought it was a knock off of the stuff at Solenaro Designs. Been around for the equestrian sector for years. Bracelets, necklaces, earrings etc. Really cutting edge. And yes I have horses.
