Magnetic Spheres Sculptures by Dimitri Tishchenko - Neatorama

By day, Dimitri Tischenko is a computer programmer. By night, he's a mad genius constructing impossibly complex geometrical sculptures using neodymium magnet spheres (like the popular Buckyballs or other brands available online).

The one above is titled 7-7 Tight Interlock Sphere, described by Dimitri as "two layered circles consisting of 7 balls ... too fragile to put down" to photograph.

While beautiful and awesome...not terribly exciting. It just takes patience and enough sets of buckyballs. I have 3 sets and make similar things by just playing around. If I could afford more sets, many of these wouldn't be that hard to make. You just have to get the polarity thing down. However I give him props on including some instructions with his photos.

Agreed. I make things like this all the time with my rare earth magnets. Pretty, but not genius.

I did time with Dimitri! I remember he used to show us those buckyballs in the klink!

I picked up a set of the Buckyballs shortly after Christmas, and quickly managed to lose two of them, which makes it hard to do a lot of the shapes. I'll probably pick up another set and some spares soon.

We have a magnet commons group on Flickr he is currently the largest contributer too; but He will probably even agree; ZenMagnets are the best; don't waste your time with Buckyballs.

I've created some cool magnet stuff too (see Korey's links) ... but, the genius that Dimitri brings to the table is the creative variation and invention that he employs by coming up with cool new subunits on which to build new, complex, geometric shapes from ... there is a lot of "been there, done that" claims ... but have you come up with this many cool variations in the short amount of time that he has? ... now that is genius.
