Active WWII Grenades Used As Bookends

The bomb squad blew up two World War II hand grenades in Deland, Florida last Tuesday morning.
The man was given the pineapple-style grenade by a neighbor, who used the explosive as a bookend, deputies said.

When deputies arrived in the DeLand neighborhood, they found the man, who told them he had pulled the pin on the grenade, put the pin back and placed the grenade outside.

The man told deputies his neighbor had a second grenade.

That woman told Local 6 the grenades belonged to her deceased husband, who fought in World War II, and were used as bookends for several years.

The explosions left a 2-foot crater in the ground. Link -via Arbroath

I can remember being 14 years old and my father having me hop out of the car, and drop off a live grenade at the police station. no officer was in station, so the receptionist took it~! No questions asked. That was in the mid 70's. He bought at a flea market--thinking it was a dummy-then realized it was real at home.

The house I grew up in was built on land that used to be part of a WWII training camp. When I was a kid, my brothers and I found two hand grenades in our front yard while playing in the dirt. They were rusted and they weren't live anymore and I still have one sitting in a box in my parents house.
