Waiting for Black Friday

Lorie and Ryan Davenport are camped out in front of Best Buy in St. Petersburg, Florida, so they will be first in line for the Black Friday sale a full week from today. They switch off heir duties with another couple, and say they are saving places for ten people altogether, but this might tend to put a crimp in their Thanksgiving holiday.
"We've been doing this for six years now and we got beat out by the same guy for the last six years," said Lorie Davenport. "So this year, we said, this might be our last year, it might be our last hurrah, so we're coming extra early if we have to because we are gonna be first if it kills us."

After getting an OK from Best Buy management, the Davenports are now in it for the long haul.

Although the couple say they're not sure what they'll buy when the doors open at 5 a.m. next Friday, they are hoping for a good deal on a large-screen TV or perhaps something from the Apple Mac line.

Shopping is very important to some people. http://www2.tbo.com/content/2010/nov/18/190004/st-pete-couple-in-line-a-week-early-for-black-frid/news-money/ -via J-Walk Blog

It's very possible to get Apple products at a discount from other vendors (often for less than the student discount). See, for example, AppleInsider.com's Mac pricing guide. Even some TJ Maxx and Marshalls are now carrying the iPad at a $100 discount.

Totally agree Gail.
I hate Black Friday so damn much. Did it once at Best Buy. We didn't camp out or anything, my brother and I got there a about 4:30 and the line was already going out of the parking lot. It was fun b/c we still got most of what we wanted, but never again. I hate crowds and good lord the lines to check out were wrapped around the inside of the store. It took us 2hrs to get checked out.

"Its not just a bargin these guys are looking for, its an adventure."

Spoken like a Walmart Land Hippo.

Climbing a Colorado 14er is an adventure, waiting in line so you can save a few bucks on overpriced then put on sale piece-o-crap is not.

The day after Thanksgiving is traditionally the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. In recent years, many stores open at ridiculously early hours to sell advertised items at deep discounts. The problem is, they never have enough of the items to last more than a short time, so people are there waiting for the stores to open. Sometimes the crowds are so big and the shoppers so desperate for a bargain that people get hurt or even killed.

The term Black Friday came into use because the sales on that day can put a business into the black for the year. Everything from that day on is profit.
