Don't Get a Divorce: Stay Un-Divorced Instead

Unhappily married? Thinking of getting a divorce? Why make it complicated (unless you want to re-marry) - here's a growing trend of married people staying un-divorced:

Technically, the two are married. They file joint tax returns; she’s covered by his insurance. But they see each other just several times a year. “Since separating we get along better than we ever have,” he said. “It’s kind of nice.”

And at 58, he sees no reason to divorce. Their children have grown and left home. He asked himself: Why bring in a bunch of lawyers? Why create rancor when there’s nowhere to go but down?

“To tie a bow around it would only make it uglier,” Mr. Frost said. “When people ask about my relationship status, I usually just say: ‘It’s complicated. I like my wife, I just can’t live with her.’ ”

Pamela Paul of The New York Times has the story: Link

My sister-in-law's parents were un-divorced for about 15 years. Her dad was abusive and had anger issues, so her mom kicked him out for the good of the kids. But she still loved him and they never divorced, even though mom lived in Illinois and dad lived in California. Now that the kids are grown and dad has gotten some counselling, the two of them are living back together.

My grandparents were un-divorced for the last 10 years of my granddaddy's life. They couldn't stand living with each other any more so my grandfather moved out.

huh...my parents at 59 are doing this. They are friends still it's just after 35 years of working together the idea of being home together in retirement drove them insane. It's strange but common.

Hello,
I'm a production assistant at NBC's TODAY Show, and we're currently working on a segment about married couples who choose to live separately. I'm looking for a couple that would be willing to go on camera and be a part of that segment... if you or someone you know in NY/NJ/DC/LA/Chicago fits the description and might be interested, I'd love to hear from you! Please email me as soon as possible at theundivorced@gmail.com.
Thanks,
Erica Zucco
