Ecuadoran Drug Smuggling Submarine

By John Farrier in Crime & Law on Jul 4, 2010 at 9:27 am

Law enforcement agents in Ecuador discovered a fairly modern, long-range submarine built by narcotics smugglers. It was about to launch for a trip to North America:

The sophisticated camouflaged vessel has a conning tower, periscope and air-conditioning system. It measured about nine feet high from the deck plates to the ceiling and stretched nearly a 100 feet long. The DEA says it was built for transoceanic drug trafficking.

“The submarine’s nautical range, payload capacity, and quantum leap in stealth have raised the stakes for the counter-drug forces and the national security community alike,” said DEA Andean Regional Director Jay Bergman.

It is unclear how far the camouflage-painted submarine could have traveled, but it is believed to be sophisticated enough to cover thousands of miles — and certainly to make it to the North American coast.

This reminds me of a great Czech movie on Youtube entitled (I think) “The Fantastic World of Jules Verne.” Wonderful special effects–including a submarine that sails the world.

From what I’ve read about drug-running submarines before, most can only run just under the surface of the water, and cannot dive. Even more common are sub/boats that cannot dive at all, and have a significant portion of their bodies above the water line (but only a foot or leass above the water). Still, very impressive and scary at the same time.

They are part of the arms race between the Coast Guard and the drug runners. The fast boat strategy is becoming less profitable for the drug runners, as the Coast Guard has gotten better at catching them.

Another money burning farce by the DEA.

The only “war” is the fantasy one the cops/feds/prosecutors/prison subcontractors want to sustain in order to keep they money train chugging along.
