Prisons "Retoxify" Drug-Free Inmates Before Release

Since they'll be doing drugs after their release from prison anyway, why not give them a head start?

Here's the strange story of how some English prisons are actually "retoxifying" former addicts who'd been clean for years in prison:

The process, called "retoxification", is allegedly designed to boost the tolerance of former addicts who are deemed likely to start using drugs on their release, to minimise the risk of them taking an overdose. [...]

The Sun reported that the process has been ongoing in English prisons for the last five years and that more than 460 prisoners have undergone retoxification. It was already known to be in operation in Scotland.

Senior police officers were said to be furious at the news, with one saying: "We have enough difficulties coping with drug-fuelled crime without ministers sanctioning this.

"It's one of the craziest ideas from any government."

Its not even The Sun, its The Telegraph quoting The Sun.

There is the occasional article that pops up here that really makes me doubt the "neatness" of this site. Unfortunately you clearly have no intelligent people from the UK working on your site, or you would know never to quote the bloody Sun or Telegraph for anything, except maybe "immigrant invasion" articles or "celebrity" stories. They are both sh*t newspapers and authorities on nothing.

Even if this is a real thing, it's still stupid. If they OD on the street, they're dead and not causing more problems...I don't advocate people's deaths, but if they kill themselves with drugs, they obviously weren't the cream of the crop to begin with.

Except the (probably fake) article says it's the prisons injecting the prisoners with drugs before being released.

Not the craziest idea by far -- but this doesn't make it not stupid.

Florida psychiatrists in the late '80s decided that child sex offenders should be forced to watch child porn movies and then babysit children...

Now THAT is whack-a-zoid!

i have worked 25 years + in mental health with more than 6 years substance-abuse-specific therapies, and the term "intoxification" means to ingest toxins or poisons. as a therapist to poison a person in order to discharge him/her from a substance abuse program is to place a baby that was just removed from a burning building and toss it back into the flame to die. because other than a life of sobriety for the substance-dependent person, is death.
