Minimalist Chair

By John Farrier in Home & Garden on Apr 15, 2010 at 1:16 pm

Designer Alejandro Aravena of the firm Vitra created a very simple chair. It’s a strap that wraps around your legs and back to hold you into a seated position. “Chairless” was inspired by a picture of an Ayoreo (an indigenous group in Paraguay) person doing something similar. A portion of the proceeds from this chair will be donated to a foundation to benefit indigenous nations of Paraguay.

I bought a similar minimalist chair in the summer of 1986 at the Minnesota State Fair. It has a broad strap across the lower back with two adjustable straps that go around the knees, so it’s maybe one step more complicated than this one. It’s called a NadaChair, and I still have it. I just checked – yep, they have a website: http://www.nadachair.com.

That is not a chair according to Funk&Wagnalls.
    It’s a strap.

As a professional line sitter at such events as PAX (probably only PAX) I can see how this would be useful. Those cement floors really do a number on you.

A better alternative, in my opinion, is to stretch and practice the natural squatting form. If you do it every day, it’s actually quite a relaxing way to sit. I know a lot of people that can’t even get into that position, feet flat, good lumbar arch.

The only bad thing about it is that it leaves your gonads open for a sneak attack.

NadaChair is awesome! I had no idea how much I was slouching until I stopped when I got a NadaChair. I actually find my self correcting my sitting posture more because of it.

I agree with max. it’s not a chair, its a strap. I think at the minimum, to be a chair, it has to have a seat (IMO).
