People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals says it's unfair to keep the animal in captivity and subject him to the huge crowds and bright lights that accompany tens of thousands of revelers each Feb. 2 in Punxsutawney, a tiny borough about 65 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. PETA is suggesting the use of an animatronic model.
But William Deeley, president of the Inner Circle of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, says the animal is "being treated better than the average child in Pennsylvania." The groundhog is kept in a climate-controlled environment and is inspected annually by the state Department of Agriculture.
Deeley considers this a publicity stunt. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/01/27/AR2010012701394.html

When you go to the top, there's always just one man (or woman).
I just concerned they might need to chill out a little bit, Phil has it better than most animals in the world (captive or otherwise). If anything, Phil promotes groundhogs and the animal kingdom in general for their 'natural' cognitive abilities and a man-made tradition recognizing that positive ability.
I was intrigued by your question. Who exactly is pulling the strings there and why don't they want us to know? It took me a while, but I'm persistent.
Here's what I found out:

And good treatment or not. This is possibly the dumbest friggin' "tradition" in history.
Maybe the point is to get people realizing that there are people out there that believe even a stupid and yard-wrecking groundhog deserves to be free. Maybe it will penetrate the think skulls of a few proleteriates who may entertain the notion of becoming more aware of where their Lunchable meals come from.
Thanks dude, I've been waiting for somebody to do that.
I just didn't want to do it myself, I work on a public computer and searching for something peta-related might get me flagged here at the meat rendering plant. lol
No, I'm just lazy.
Argh. Can't they please go away and we can get someone who is a better representative for decent treatment of our food source animals? Like Temple Grandin maybe?
you have a good cause and no perspective or common sense whatsoever
Seriously, does anyone take PETA seriously anymore? I don't think they realize that them doing things like this, objecting to things like this actually hurts their already tarnished image.
You media whores at PETA do nothing to further your cause when you crusade against harmless activities such as GHD and Punxy Phil. Get a grip.
You come off as silly nitwits, and have done far more harm than good to the cause of TRULY helping animals. As someone who has raised funds for animal welfare, I have seen first hand how our donations go down -- way down -- after you pull stupid stunts such as this.
Idiots.
People Eating Tasty Animals.
Normally I rankle at the hate that comes out in Neatorama comments, but I feel like PETA has worked hard over the years to earn it.
That said, I still don't like it when people are like, "omgstfu." PETA gets to speak, just like everyone else. Let them dig their grave.
Yeah, they have the right to speak like anyone else. Like I do even. So, again, PETA: STFU. You're like that annoying hippy girl in college we all hoped would die painfully in her sleep so we wouldn't have to listen to her whining, and her false moralizing, and her endless dramatics and stunts.
I get about 3 or 4 per year.
"I wonder what a groundhog tastes like."
My dog won't even eat them and that's saying a lot.
(because that's all PETA is, one giant troll.)
Animals are delicious. Case closed.
