Wildlife Photographer of the Year Disqualified

We posted the Iberian wolf picture that won Jose Luis Rodriguez the 2009 Veolia Environment Wildlife Photographer of the Year award. Now the contest judges have decided to take back the award because the wolf is not exactly "wildlife".

The experts compared the winning picture to pictures of Ossian, a tame wolf that lives at a zoological park near Madrid called Canada Real.

"You can see several very distinctive markings and the experts all agreed that, yes, it's the same wolf," said Mr Carwardine.

Wildlife photographer Mark Carwardine was one of the competition judges. He told BBC News that this was the first time in its 46 year history that there would not be a winner.

It may be the orientation of the photo of the tame wolf, but he looks like his snout is shorter than the one in the Wildlife picture. I see some similarities, but with just these 2 pictures, I see more differences.

TOTALLY Agree with the judges on this one.. otherwise whats the point..

I've got photos of cougars up close and personal in the act of makin' luurve... it was in a zoo too but if you didn't know it you'd swear I'd stumbled across them in the wild...

there is enough fakery in advertising.. I think the judges did the right thing and stripped away the award from a fake wanna be photographer...

I think they did the right thing as well. If the contest is for WILDLIFE, then that's what the subject matter should be. Not a tamed pet.
It's still a lovely photo though.

Unfortunately Rodriguez already spent all his prize money on a gargantuan pile of cheeseburgers, of which he long ago consumed. a pity it is really, as all the starving children are crying even more now.

What I don't get is why is there no winner now? Wouldn't they just shift over a spot giving the second place the first and so on?
