The Buzz Bomb of Greencastle, Indiana

The V-1 “Buzz Bomb” was the first practical cruise missile in military history. Nazi Germany fired many at Allied population centers in the last year of World War II. One of two brought back to the United States at the end of the war ended up as a war memorial to the veterans of Putnam County, Indiana, dedicated in 1947. Today, it’s on display at that outdoor memorial in the town of Greencastle. Deidre of Wandering Goblin visited it recently and took some excellent pictures, including the one above.

Mum remembers seeing these go over, first in Kent, and then later in London. Her recollection was that they were treated with a certain amount of contempt. Compared to an hour of two of night-time raid and trying to get to work the next day they were more of a damned nuisance – though deadly if one fell on you.

I would say it was the other way around, that the Cruise missile is merely the latest iteration of the V1.

They were known as Doodle-bugs and Buzz bombs in the UK, where they rained down on the south coat of England.

There was a V1 on static display at Keesler AFB Biloxi Ms for many years.
