The Cable Connector Quiz

By Miss Cellania in Gadgets, Hacks & Mods on Jan 8, 2010 at 12:43 pm

Today’s Lunchtime Quiz at mental_floss is a lot of fun, especially for someone like me who spent decades connecting audio-video equipment professionally. I’m sure you will enjoy it, too! Can you identify ten different types of connecting cables, both old and new? Good luck; I scored 80%. Link

of course the first mental_floss quiz I get a 100% on is one that make me think I’m a dork!

I got 100%. Maybe I need to get out more…

100% here as well, but if you’re old enough it’s probably no wonder.

8/10, I botched the first 2. I’m good with the computer stuff, but not ever knowledgable with the audio visual stuff.

    100%, pretty easy.
You’d think the quiz maker would have at least used the proper name for the “telephone cable” 8P8C or commonly called RJ45

9/10. Never heard of TRS cable.

A bit too easy. 100% here, too.

If they wanted to be really tough they could’ve included some golden oldies like HP-IL, and maybe a CGA or an IBM token ring connector thrown in just to be tricky.

Wow, that was mindlessly easy, didn’t even require thinking!

Oh, and Piggy, just FYI, I believe it showed a RJ-11 connector, not RJ-45.

Woo 100% here too (and I’m a 23 year old woman). Then again, I did spend a year selling TVs part time!

Another 100%… but then again I’ve been doing both A/V and computer work professionally for a long time…

I missed one, the telephone cable!

8/10; would have been 9 if I hadn’t been playing with the arrow keys.

Piggy: The ‘telephone cable’ is RJ11, not RJ45.

I don’t recall now which ones I missed, but I’m pretty sure they had something to do with games.

Several of the pictures are missing – which makes it all rather tricky! I’ve tried turning AdBlock off, but it still only shows some.

Ah – a while later and the pictures are back and I got 100%.

100%. Almost too easy for this 19 year old tech-head.

Telephone cable was a dead giveaway, there’s no red in a Cat5/6 Ethernet cable…

Unless you’re colourblind… 4 pins versus 8. Ethernet cabling tend to be round due to twisted pairing whereas telephone tend to be flat.

10/10. I’m an AV guy, so I would have some real issues if I got any wrong.

9/10 for the telephone cable vs. cat5 cable. Oops! I can tell if I was holding one. :P

10/10. I’m a big AV/Computer nerd. Ha, I remember parallel. You could daisy-chain like 10 printers together. Good times.

100% It was incredibly easy. I was waiting for something along the lines of a 13W3 but it never happened.

Yay! I passed my nerd exam with a score of 100%.
    That was real easy.
I can now sit with a smug sense of satisfaction, along with all the other people who have no life.
