Petri Dish Cookies

By Minnesotastan in Food & Drink on Dec 11, 2009 at 10:09 am

Petri dish cookiesInstantly comprehensible to anyone who has spent time in a microbiology lab.

I am still not sure if my streaking technique is up to par on cookies, but hey I’m working with royal icing not agar. However, I did improve my counts of isolated colonies by loading on the nonpareils this time.

The baker/artist’s blog has a variety of other clever culinary concoctions.

They must smell great comming right out of the hot air oven, and straight to the agar plate.

Gauldar’s thought is an interesting one – to size them appropriately and then serve them inside a real Petri dish.

Veracosa, that is the worst idea ever, having tasted culture broth o_O

Speaking of microbe-y sweets, check out this cake! The petri dish is a bit tall, but we are a cake-loving lab :P The baker modeled the microbes on stuff from giantmicrobes.com

Oh, even though the culture broth jello shots are a horrible idea unless you’re already stone drunk, our lab undergrads like throwing parties that serve drinks in flasks and beakers.

One time a guy tried bringing some bunsen burners over, they hooked them up to a jury-rigged propane tank, and some bad things happened. I must advise against that. :|

@Lucia – the best way to get information about the recipe would be to post your questions at the “link” listed in the post.
