When The Sizzle is Worth More Than The Steak

By Minnesotastan in Fashion on Nov 23, 2009 at 6:21 pm

Playboy logoHugh Hefner and his daughter Christie spent over 50 years building the image of Playboy magazine, which is now up for sale.

Iconix Brand Group, a fashion house, has expressed interest in purchasing Playboy Enterprises, but they have no interest in the famous magazine, its storehouse of interviews, or its photo archive of naked women.  Competition from the internet has rendered those resources less valuable.  On the other hand…

…the bunny ears brand hearkens back to an era when Playboy was widely read and epitomized the idea of the urbane sophisticate who appreciates the finer things that the swinging bachelor lifestyle promises.

So the company is seeking a partner in the publishing world to take the magazine and other Playboy-related assets.  All they want is the logo.

    Ahh, good old Branding. All your products and intellectual property can be worth crap, but as long as there is a sense of nostalgia that is carried by the name and logo is worth it's weight in gold. The bunny logo is probably as well recognized as the yellow McDonalds "M".

    @whitcwa

    The more sacred it is, the higher the price tag.

    Oh yeah I'm looking to purchase that old Pan-Am globe logo so I can sell more peanutbutter. What a bunch of morons. Heff should trademark that as a family icon and sell the rest. :q

    My town had the last "Playboy Club" in our country, then it closed. I guess that means we have the most "urbane sophisticates" in the country. I'm so proud.

    Playboy jumped the shark years ago and pretty much died when they didn't try to capture the Maxim target market (which was their original market years ago) by covering up their ladies...
