Snail Named After Crocodile Hunter

Posted by Miss Cellania in Animal on November 15, 2009 at 1:24 pm

A tree snail found in the tropical forest near Cairns, Australia has been named after the late Steve Irwin. Dr. John Stanisic of the Queensland Museum named it Crikey steveirwini.

The scientist described Crikey steveirwini as “a colourful snail, with swirling bands of creamy yellow, orange-brown and chocolate giving the shell an overall khaki appearance”.

“It was the khaki colour that immediately drew the connection to the late Crocodile Hunter,” Dr Stanisic said.

Okay, I think enough time has passed that I can say what I really feel about the Crocodile Hunter. I'm sorry he was killed, I really am, but when he died I was just very, very surprised that he hadn't been killed by an animal any sooner. I had to say that I saw this coming, and that sooner or later he was going to be killed by an animal. He was extremely reckless in his approach to all animals, dangerous and otherwise, especially handling them, and invading their spaces. I was even told of a herpetologist who warned him not to go into a certain area, because it was home to an especially aggressive specimen of the fer-de-lance snake, which is a snake well known to be territorial and defensive. He went right in, actively looking for, finding, and catching it. This is one of the most deadly venomous snakes. I'm very sorry for his families loss, but it just goes to show you that when the cameras are on, people do stupid, stupid things. And popularity magnifies this effect, and he died because of it.

Actually, Melphistopheles, he died in what was pretty much a freak accident. He went into waters containing a large amount of normally docile, peaceful creatures and, for whatever reason, one stabbed him through the chest. As I said, a freak accident.

I'm going to have to disagree with you, Him. He would not have been stabbed if the animal did not feel threatened in some way. I always felt that He was an obnoxious asshole who tormented animals for fame. Yes, I know he did alot to help animals, to, but his behaviour was way out of line.

"This is the most dangerous crocodile in Africa. Let's poke it with a stick!"

Truth be told, we all knew he was going to die young and by an animal. We just didn't expect it to be something as docile as a stingray.
