The Great Bell is referred to as “Big Ben”. While it is acceptable to call the tower/clock/bell unit “Big Ben” to refer to either the clock or the tower alone as “Big Ben” is not correct.

Its about 10 feet tall and back in the days before TV and nice cars people took pride in things like having a very large bell. The Great Bell is referred to as “Big Ben”. While it is acceptable to call the tower/clock/bell unit “Big Ben” to refer to either the clock or the tower alone as “Big Ben” is incorrect.

When the British Monarchy first became a twitter account, I followed them for exactly this reason, they tended to post their updates every hour on the hour exactly. So I could tell when an hour had passed when reading my tweets.

I’ll be the first pedant to point out that big ben is the bell not the tower….

though blatantly everyone means the tower when they say big ben… so it’s a bit of a moot point
