The Most Popular Christmas Toys By Year Since 1960

By Queuebot in Toys on Nov 3, 2009 at 6:17 pm

If you are a sucker for nostalgia, this will make your day. I can remember getting that amazing trio of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Super Soakers, and then a Gameboy. In fact, those would still make great gifts for grown men with a penchant for walks down memory lane.

The holiday shopping season is quickly descending upon us, which means this year’s more popular toys and consumer electronics are soon to become in increasingly high-demand. In recent memory, the Sony Playstation III, Beanie Babies, and of course, the Tickle-Me-Elmo have generated a considerable amount of hype – quickly selling out, and then establishing a re-sale market. But have you ever wondered what the “it toys” have been throughout the decades? We have; and as a result, we decided to compile a time-line which illustrates the top toys from the last 50 years. Here they are, the most popular Christmas toys since 1960.

Ain’t no way that D&D was the most popular XMas toy/game in 1974.

What’s with the Pillsbury Doughboy? And boy, when you get past the year 2000, a lot of those are not toys, they are very expensive types of electronics. SAD really.

whats with the Pillsbury doughboy in 1986? And after 2000 the “toys” look more like electronics. Kind of sad.

Knock knock christine. That’s a Staypuft marshmallow man from Ghostbusters. Not the Doughboy. ( I have no idea how it made it on the list either) I too am skeptical about the D&D. I think Knevel should have made the list somwhere in the early 70′s. At 40yo the only one I had the year it was popular was PS2. Yes I had to buy that one myself.

This list is very wrong. Pretty sure they just made this stuff up.

I find it very hard to believe that a freaking Nerf ball has ever been the most popular Christmas toy.

I’m surprised Trivial Pursuit isn’t on the list for the 80′s.

The Pillsbury Doughboy was because of the movie Ghostbusters. My little brother got one for Xmas.
