$47K Food Bill, $7K Tip: Just a Friday Night Out for Russian Billionaire Roman Abramovich

Recession? What recession? Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich dropped $47,000 on food last Friday at Nello's in New York City. Note that a lucky waiter/waitress got a $7000 tip: Link

Lily, I think the amount ordered is already taken into account in the right column (ie one bottle of Chateau Petrus is $5000, 2 is $10000). The numbers look right.

The value on the left is the number ordered and the value on the right is the total for the number ordered not the each price. So the 'la tache' was $5,000 each for a total of $15,000.

There are few things in this world more irritating than people who rush to proclaim something they don't understand "fake."

Seriously, folks, if you were going to fake something like this, would you say it was from Roman Abramovich? No. You'd say it was Justin Timberlake or Rush Limbaugh or someone most of us have actually heard of.

The receipt adds up correctly. The number of items are already factored into the item price.

Bottom line - A spaghetti dinner for two cost more than enough to feed 1,000 couples with a nice meal.

If you follow the link trail, you'll this:
« FTA: “In an email, a spokesman for Mr. Ambramovich denied the bill was Mr Abramovich’s. He said Mr. Abramovich did eat at the restaurant but that the “party spent no more than a tiny fraction of that amount - less than a couple of percent.” »

You'll also see Jay-Z mentioned instead.

So apparently the billionaire denies it, but the restaurant's staff affirms it.

Ditto that Skippy.
I don't see what the big deal is. Hell, if someone with that much money wants to spend it on a big extravagant dinner, then more power to them and yay for the waiter/ess who gets that table.

Is it weird that this isn't shocking to me? If you take out the extremely rare and expensive items, the prices aren't bad for what you get. They pay to be and be seen. That's why you eat off of Madison Ave. Truffles are always expensive because they are not native to this area and you can't just grow them. They have to be found and shipped in a short amount of time. Is it a day?

Southampton is on Long Island silly! I know because I live here. Although if he really wants to stimulate the economy he should spend his money elsewhere as Southampton has enough money circulating in it! Oh, and those ARE accurate prices for Nello menu items.

When you are paying $12 for a glass of water, then you are spending money just for the privalege of overpaying. Its a big "look how rich I am!", on par with the whole 'lighting a cigarette with $100 bill' cliche.

He can spend his money on what he wants, but something about this mentality really annoys me.
