The Van Gogh Letter Sketches

A few people were lucky enough to be pan pals of a sort with Vincent Van Gogh. Van Gogh often added sketches or paintings to his letters, to illustrate what he wrote about. BibliOdyssey has a collection of these letter sketches, along with the letters that accompanied them. Link

Van Gogh as a documentarian. It is somewhat amazing how precisely his sketches show the world in which he lived. I have to wonder how the recipients felt or if they appreciated what they received. Currently my desktop is Starry Night. Everyone know how precise Van Gogh tended to be in his paintings but nobody knows what stars or planets he wanted to show. Not a problem whith these sketches.

All his letters are just published on the web after a research of 15 years. Check them out here: http://www.vangoghletters.org/vg/
This publication is accompanied by a beautiful exhibition in the van Gogh museum in Amsterdam.

For almost 20 years, I was fortunate enough to correspond via snail mail with a terrifically gifted artist friend who liberally illustrated his letters (written in gorgeous cursive, too) with wonderful sketches of whatever he was writing about -- needless to say, I treasure them (alas, we mostly talk on the phone now).
