The World’s Largest Shopping Mall

Posted by Miss Cellania in Travel & Places, World Records on October 9, 2009 at 10:45 pm

The largest shopping mall in the world is no longer the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota. The South China Mall near Guangzhou, China is twice as big! This is not a success story; there are only about a dozen stores open in the giant facility. However, because the mall is considered “too big to fail”, it is kept open with a staff working every day. The series POV tells the story in a 13 minute video. Link -via Dark Roasted Blend

The Mall of America was NEVER the world's largest. The West Edmonton Mall in Alberta, Canada was bigger. It ranked first until 2004 when the eastern hemisphere malls outpaced it. It's now fifth largest, with the MOA way, way behind.

Don't brag when bragging rights aren't there. My city brags about having the longest bridge over the shortest span of water ... a meaningless accomplishment (and not true).

Oh China, when will you learn that you don't have to always have the biggest EVERYTHING.

I'm no shopping mall expert. Or even a fan. I wrote this from information at the linked site.

Building giant edifices that no one needs to tout the superiority of communism. Haven't we seen this pattern before? And with spectacular failure no less?

Mall of America is in Bloomington, Minnesota.
Malls are great when it is hot and dusty outside and parks are not accessible or well-maintained, which are true in some countries in asia. I also wonder if building big structures is a sign of insecurity?

Actually Zakk, from what I understand WEM is still the largest in North America... and the CN Tower is the largest tower in the world.

"Too big to fail." Giggle. Famous last words! The makers of the Titanic said something similar.

Miss Cellania, that's what fact checking is for.

The WEM was world's largest over 20 years ago.
