This diagram (actually an Euler diagram {wiki}) sorts out professional baseball team names. Even more interesting is the accompanying list of links and explanations for every team name included. Link -via Jason Kottke

    Etymological*

We're talking about words not insects.

Yikes! And I was so careful about where to put the "y"! I'll get that fixed. Thanks!

I wonder why the Cardinals aren't in the Animals column.
Seems like a dumb mistake to me.

Uh, St. Louis Cardinals mascot is a bird, not a color.

I'm pretty sure Cards represent a bird, thus the mascot (cardinal). Interestingly enough, they did start out as the 'brown stockings'.

The Cardinals name came before the mascot. They were the St. Louis Perfectos for a year and they had red striped uniforms. A sports writer heard a woman say what a lovely shade of cardinal it was, and the name stuck. I'm just glad they're no longer the Perfectos.

I wish they were still the Perfectos. Best baseball team name ever.

Perfectos would be an awful hard name to live up to!

Why are Tigers in the locality section? Are there a lot of tigers in Detroit?
