The fishermen in FL have used 55 gal drums for mullet smokers for at least the last 50 years. We also used to burn trash in them.

Seriously… anon1 is right. 55 gallon drums are standard. Unless the guy is 80+ years old, I don’t see how he could claim to have come up with this idea.

There’ve been 55 gallon BBQs and smokers since there have been 55 gallon drums.

I hate to break it to you but making smokers out of these drums is standard practice among the BBQ circuit.

I think you mean “Are those 55-gallon drums or BBQ smokers?” Or “Is that a 55-gallon drum or a BBQ smoker?”

One would never say “Is that a 55-gallon drums”.
