Marcelo Bezos' Penny Pyramid

Posted by Alex in Money & Finance, Toy & Video Games, World Records on September 19, 2009 at 1:56 am

Marcelo Bezos has been collecting pennies for the past 35 years, and when his father-in-law died from colorectal cancer, he decided to do something to raise awareness for the disease: building a record-breaking pyramid out of pennies!

Here’s the video clip of the Penny Pyramid Project from 2006 – the structure contained some 280,000 pennies (Marcelo’s most recent pyramid contains over 435,000 pennies):

[YouTube - turn your speakers down if you don't like O Fortuna from Carl Orff's Carmina Burana, the techno version]

Thanks Marcelo!

What a frickin' annoying video. Even with the speakers turned down, it was hard to take. Plus, watching it get built when you know the end result was just "big whoop".

Wow, that was incredibly impressive. Are you gonna keep saving pennies after this? or are you thinking of donating them to colorectal research/awareness/etc...? GOOD LUCK finishing your goal!

Ted-get over yourself, not everything has to be shocking on the internet...somethings are just impressive...it really is your own fault for watch the whole thing if you expected a different end result.

looks like something to do when you have no job and have tons of pennies. in a way, it looked like fun... what else can you do with pennies?

I didn't watch the entire thing. The music detracted from the experience of the video. I watched enough to say, "Wow, what a retarded video."

I wasn't expecting something shocking, just interesting. "Hey a pyramid of pennies - cool!"

The whole song and dance of this was over-the-top bombastic for what it really was. Is it the Second Coming? No, it's a pyramid of pennies.

Christophe - but I did give a warning! Didn't I say that you should turn your speakers down?

We should have a contest on finding things on the web that impresses Ted. :)

    ...Poor wife and kids...!
Even more annoying than a husband who is addicted to watching footie on tv...

    lol, Alex.

I've been impressed here before, once or twice. The video just didn't have enough kittens in it for my taste. More kitten videos, please.

I am "the wife"...and I admire someone like my husband who is willing to dedicate himself to a worthwhile cause such as raising colorectal cancer awareness regardless of what other people think of him.

Sometimes his song choices do not please everyone or his editing might not impress everyone, sometimes his videos even come across as annoying to certain people...but at least he is trying to turn a pain-filled experience into a more positive situation.

As for the kids: they think their daddy is really cool....

I do ask one thing: Please me mindful of your comments. I can take the fact that you might not like the video or were not impressed by it...it is not for everyone...and that is okay... but there is no need to be down right nasty. I choose to beleive you are can come up with a more positive and constructive criticism.

    Sincerely,
    "The wife"
