That's a good point, I guess some evolution becomes stunted due to humans saying "Hey, isn't that neat", killing it, and then putting it in a jar, which is not a very efficient trait of survival.

Don't you people read the Bible? *All* snakes used to have feet:

So the LORD God said to the serpent:
"Because you have done this,
You are cursed more than all cattle,
And more than every beast of the field;
On your belly you shall go,
And you shall eat dust
All the days of your life."

Clearly the snake in the photo was born less evil than the average snake, and so it got a foot instead of having to crawl in the same way as other snakes.

Alas, this woman killed it, so evolution toward a race of kind, wholesome snakes was stopped when it had barely begun.

If it was truley using the leg as propulsion I would be scared to see one with two or even four legs. Well I guess a snake with four legs would kinda be a lizard!!

There is a bulge in the snake's body that looks as though it swallowed something about the 1.5x the length of the leg and going that distance in each direction. I would imagine that a lizard was swallowed, and burst a leg through the snake. We may never know.

Well, since most of you are going with the "it split open the side of him and is hanging out" idea, I'm forced to stand firm as the minority, and be the first to welcome our one-legged snake overlords.

Hmmm, I agree with Tim. Either it's a leftover meal that didn't digest to well or it's fake. Creepy.

But the leg has the same skin color and striping as the snake itself. The photo is too small and resolution too low for any conclusive chest-buster action.

I agree that it looks like a critter of the Chuck Norris genus punched a hole in the snakes body, trying to escape.

While random mutation is possible, you have to look at the situation and ask if this is an abnormality, or if an external source caused it. Many fish in China have gone through mutations caused by chemical run off into the waters, but nature has done stranger things before so you can't ignore that either.

if you look closely, you will see that the leg is from its last meal. popped right out his side. Not the first chinese press releases are pure garbage lies.
This happens to alot of Pythons in the Everglades trying to eat a'gator that bursts thru its side.
