Buddha Shaped Pears

You’ve seen square watermelon and even heart shaped cucumbers, but Buddha pears? They are made with a cool plastic mold that is attached while they are still little. I’d love to say more about them, but I don’t speak Spanish Portuguese, so I can’t read the original site. Any of you Neatorama readers care to help translate?

I think this is the strangest "how to" i have ever posted here because, in the end, who's going to attempt to do this at home? Well then, just for kicks, if you have already heard about the pears in the shape of buddha or even the famous square watermelons of Japan, know that the process is simple, it's enough to place a mold around the fruits when they are budding, since fruit tends to take the shape of the mold as it is developing.

I am afraid of what advertisers can do with this.

I want a pear shaped like Mario. And one shaped like Bowser.

    I will make them battle.

    The loser will be eaten.

And the winner will also be eaten.

I agree. Wonderful, Jake D. Just had a grin for the first three lines, then the end I burst out with an involuntary giggle when I got to the end.

I find it funny how it seems OK to eat Buddha yet if it were some other deity, I'm sure there would be some kind of uproar about it.

Babycakes , The Buddha is sort of pear shaped and thus sort of lends itself to the process. It's not a religious thing.

No, it's not a religious thing at all. I have to agree with Babycakes. If these were Allah pears, there'd be riots throughout the Middle East. If they were Jesus pears, there'd be reams of stern letters-to-the-editor.

I think Buddhists are way more easygoing about their icons than other religions.

    Mad guys!!
Nice experiment though! We're gonna have new moldy ideas from now.. A peach shaped like a Mango or Banana or Wall-E :p

Anyone been on that boat ride at Epcot where they take you through their greenhouse? They've got all these vegetables that are grown in the air with Mickey Mouse ears - creepy.

This makes sense because Brazil is home to the world's largest Japanese population outside of Japan itself.

    translated to portuguese it reads:

    How to make pear-shaped Buddhas

I think this is the strangest "How to" I've posted, I mean, who's going to try and make this at home? Well then, for curiosity's sake, if you've already heard of Buddha shaped pears or even the famous square watermelons of Japan, you know that it's a simple process, placing the fruits in a mold while they are growing, then the fruit tends to take on the form of the mold.

I'm afraid of what marketing people will do with this...
