The 497 Mile Long Street (800 km)

By Queuebot in Travel on Sep 3, 2009 at 4:10 pm

Can you imagine driving 500 miles on one road? Not a highway, not a freeway, a road. In central Brazil, there is such a road.

There is a road in central Brazil that is 497 miles long. Big deal you say? We are talking about a street, one street, that stretches the equivilent of New York City to Cleveland, and then some, or from Los Angles to Flagstaff, AZ. That’s a huge freaking road.

Yonge Street, which begins at the edge of Lake Ontario in Toronto and continues to Rainy River Ontario, is more than twice the length at 1,178 miles ( 1,896 km)

Confusing… The link makes the 500 mile claim, but the map/graphic on the page depicts 500 kilometers, which is closer to 300 miles. Still impressive, either way.

What makes it a “street” rather than a highway? Stop signs on every other block?

Well, there are residences on it for one. Also, speed limit, and amount of stops do factor in.

But surely it goes for LONG stretches without any residences or stop signs and there can’t be the same speed limit over the whole length. Or not?

    Moon,

Ya know, I really have no idea. Looking at the picture there certainly are stretches, I’m just not sure what is in between them, or what the rules are on the road in those stretches.

Moon, the difference between a highway and a road/street is that one is officially designated as a highway. the other is not. this is particularly true in rural areas, where county roads (and similar streets) often look exactly like official highways. it is unusual for a non-highway to go on that long, but if isn’t listed as a highway, then technically speaking, it isn’t one

What about the “Mother Road” Route 66, It was a 2 lane road from Los Angeles to Chicago.

Yonge Street is no longer the longest street, since parts of it became Highway 11; it currently ends south of Lake Simcoe.

I live right near Route 1. That goes from, what, Maine to Key West? But I guess it’s a highway, so… whatever.

Route 66? Try Route 6. The end of Cape Cod to Long Beach, CA. Now there’s a man’s road. :)

Only 500 miles long? Deforestation is not what it used to be…

“U.S. Route 1 is a major north-south U.S. Highway and it is the oldest highway that serves the East Coast of the United States. It runs over 2,000 mi (3,219 km) from Key West, Florida, north to Fort Kent, Maine, at the Canadian border.”

The worst is that these images along the road has been removed all the wood that is nearby. Note the drawing that deforestation generates. It’s like a comb. And in turn are being opened and removed other trees …
