Weirdest Magazines Still Around Today

By Alex in Book & Lit on Aug 31, 2009 at 1:07 am

Our pal Asylum blog has compiled 15 of the weirdest magazines still in publication today. Included are Crappie World Magazine (unbeknowst to me, crappie is a type of fish), Bacon Busters (Australia’s hog-hunting magazine – not, I repeat not, a cooking mag) and Girls and Corpses (a self-described "Maxim Magazine meets Dawn Of The Dead" – you’ve been warned).

    It's pronounced craa-pe not crap-e, fyi.

It's pronounced both ways really. I grew up fishing for Crappie, Blue Gill, Small Mouth and Large Mouth Bass. Whatever would bite really, but those were my favorites. Stripers are fun to go for, and yes that is spelled correctly.

I'm from Tennessee, lived in South Carolina and Virginia- always heard it crah-pe in the south. Now living in Pa. and have heard it crap-e here. Don't know if this is typical regional pronunciation.

you're from iowa, correct? crappie are an abundant farm pond fish, and a favorite catch of many kids. somewhat easy to nab, like sunfish/bluegill, but a better fighter, and easy to de-hook.

Please don't lump "girls and corpses" magazine with a simple fishing magazine! :)

Could be worse... Could be Girls and Crappie.

Lived most of my life in the Florida panhandle, Georgia, and Tennessee, plus short periods in Colorado, Kansas, and Iowa; I've only heard it pronounced "CRAP-ee."

From the link, I recently stumbled across "Garden & Gun" magazine at my local Whole Foods. Hilarious.

I have an autographed issue of Girls and Corpses from when I first saw it at comic con. I never thought it would actually survive.

A friend of mine once bought a video tape about fishing for that fish. It had the awesome title of "Getting Wet for Crappie".

Oh yes, and once the show finished, if you left the tape running, there was 8 minutes of hardcore porn at the end of it too.

    Not bad for a quid.
