Unsettling Old Photos of the “Living” Dead

By Miss Cellania in Pictures on Aug 31, 2009 at 12:10 am

Is the man in this picture dead or alive? It’s not a silly question. In the early days of photography, dead bodies would be photographed for posterity. Often this would be the only picture ever taken of the person. Sometimes the bodies were posed as if they were alive.

There’s something just unspeakably creepy about this fireman. At first glance, he looks like a normal, awkwardly-posed guy from the 19th century. But upon closer inspection, you notice a few tell-tale signs: a rigid pose and fingers, a stand not quite completely hidden behind his feet, which is holding him up by some unseen armature on his back, liberal amounts of rouge applied to too-white cheeks, and those blank, blank eyes.

This picture is available on eBay. See more possibly post-mortem posed portraits at mental_floss. Link

… and their family knew it ?!
I mean, they looked at the picture saying:
“That was uncle Johnny when he was 33 … he died couple days before … doesn’t he look great! He was so handsome!!”

This is sooooo weird !! hahahaha !!! I like the look of those old pictures!

Not wanting to be a nitpicker, but the link is broken due to having an extra “http//” in the mentalfloss domain name. :P

No trouble getting them to hold a pose for a long exposure, then?

I have a book that’s a collection of these photographs. The baby photos are particularly poignant.

hey they hold up the body by the belt or belt looking thing it looks like a metal band that goes around look at it its way too solid looking for a real belt. I think at least, I have been known to make mistakes.

This is the sort of thing that isnt neat, this is just plain: “Oh, look at that moonpicture, it has a cross in it! It must mean that aliens visits us and that the moonlandings never happened and was an coverup for the existens of a world outside USA! We are doomed!”
