Dark Stores

Photo: Brian Ulrich

Photographer Brian Ulrich has spent the last few year examining “the peculiarities and complexities of the consumer-dominated culture in which we live.” His latest project captures the beauty and sadness of empty stores and failed businesses.

Most recently a new project began in 2008 entitled Dark Stores, Ghost Boxes and Dead Malls. In the recent economic downturn some of the very stores I photographed at the beginning of the project are now emptied and laid barren in the hulking empty architecture of the big box, mall or store.

Very cool. Reminds me of a Modest Mouse lyric:

“The malls are the soon to be ghost towns,
    so long, very well, goodbye…”

I’ve seen the Dead Malls Dot Com site before, but this one seems sadder.

I recognized a few. Very eerie in a cool way. Some look like they would make great film backgrounds, for horror films or sci-fi films anyway.

I like his photo’s but the site is rather ugly with regards to navigation.

Speaking of which, could ‘Neatorama’ please open links in a new window as I keep losing you as I dig into the ether.

Really enjoy your site! I’m here most days to aee what you’ve posted.

Interesting. However, Six Flags mall in Arlington, TX is not dead…yet. It is dying, but not completely dead.

    7.

I saw the six flags mall and instantly searched to see if it had actually closed. Gotta give them credit for getting through 2 foreclosures.

For those who would like to see a mall stuck in the 80′s, here ya go:
