Ancient Dice

By Miss Cellania in Toys on Aug 21, 2009 at 11:07 am

Arjan Verweij collects dice of all kinds, including this Egyptian pair made of bone which is around 2,000 years old. See other ancient dice made from ivory, lead, horn, wood, bronze, and stone. Dice are also categorized by geography and by configuration. Link -via J-Walk Blog

That’s kinda neat I guess. If they found an ancient monopoly set, that would be something.

Yeah, I remember seeing in an issue of Dungeon Magazine there were a set of dice that were crafted from dinosaur bones.

Roman 14-sided dices? I guess nerds are coming a long way ;)

Roman 1 : ’12 on the dice : now my elf is attacking your troops’
Roman 2 : ‘an elf? they don’t exist yet!’
    Roman 1 : ‘you’re such an history nazi’…

2,000 years old my butt. I’m sure they were carved out about WWII.

    Hmm …

    Not bone,
    Not Egyptian,
    Not 2000 years old,
    But… they are dice!

    Give me a break.

This is so cool. I read somewhere that ancient dice where made from the ankle bone of a sheep or dog called Astragali way back 40,000 years ago. And in china it was made from ivory. I’m kinda confuse. the holes indicating 1-6 numbers looks perfectly rounded how come?
