Esslam Zahra of Egypt mounted a retractable fifth wheel on the back of his car, set at a right angle to the other four wheels, in order to pivot into tight parking spots.

I saw a video of this same technique years ago…and it was some group of high school kids that did it. So as far as I know, I consider them the inventors of this idea

Or, they both ended up inventing it.

And to think he just could have learned to parallel park.

That’s pretty cool for him. Not so cool for the people on either side of him who now may be trapped.

If you think about it there is only an extremely slight advantage over parallel parking, which uses the identical pivot principle, though the front wheels can’t go all the way to 90 degrees. However, if he were to move both ends at once using the front wheels and the 5th wheel he may well be on to something. Better practice with some cones first.

Egyptian load of crap is what this is. I saw the same invention on one of those old News reels. A search on the inernet would probably bring it up.Plus the guy in the news reel was using a 40′s model car with the Continental tire covers on the back. Much classier.

While it is certainly no Giza, I am glad that the Egyptians are once again making forays into engineering after a 2,000-year dryspell.

This comes up somewhere in a 1940s Popular Science. Fun – but hardly new. I’ve seen similar devices every ten years or so for ages.

What about a two-wheeled unicycle? That should have been invented by now.
