Choose Your Apocalypse

By John Farrier in Paranormal, Science & Tech on Aug 4, 2009 at 3:50 pm

How will the world end in the immediate future? Slate has a both serious and fun look at this question, allowing users to suggest up to five of one hundred forty-four possible problems that could bring about the end of America and/or the world. These include alien invasion, a swine flu epidemic, and Vermont achieving independence, among many other options.

The application focuses primarily on the United States and its demise, but many problems you could throw into your chosen apocalypse would impact the entire world (e.g. asteroid collision).

What nightmare scenario do you choose?

Well, if there’s one thing I’ve learned from movies, it’s that alien invasions, asteroid collisions, early ice ages, and the rise of Our Robot Overlords all will only affect the US.

The rest of us seem to always get off scot free, unless we have a token recognizable landmark. When the Aliens are destroying the States, they always like to nip off and bash down the Eiffel tower or the pyramids just for fun, but otherwise, the rest of us have nothing to worry about.

abdulhamid: Whether or not one agrees with it (some would call it trolling), that was a pretty funny comment.

I went for a Big Brother/ aliens combo and ended up a “bloody misanthrope”.

I also got bloody misanthrope, but chose foreign invasion, nuclear waste and floods.

As far as the American Apocalypse goes, it’s clearly about China calling dues on debt. After that, most of the other scenarios will fall into place like dominoes.

But overall, the experiment fails with the inclusion of 12/21/2012.

the end of america isn’t the end of the world.
