I admit it took me a minute to realize that Jack Black wasn’t the product of a strange love triangle, but that that he had two rocket scientist parents AND he was the college friend of Tim Robbins.

The “he was” part was an important addition that assisted in my realization.

The rest of the Jack and Jill rhyme makes it seem like it’s Jill’s fault that Jack fell down and broke his crown. She did come tumbling after, after all. For all we know Jack may have been acting a fool and broke his own crown. What we have here is a lack of evidence and mother jumping to the wrong conclusions.

I remember watching adam savage talk at maker faire and saying the whole expression, which not many people know, is “jack of all trades, master of none, though often better than master of one.” A good example of something being good, then bad, then back to good again.

Jack the given name may be from Middle English Jakke. Although Wikipedia has been wrong about other things. But as a Jack (Surname) I can state that all the hundred’s of Jacks (again surname) I know come directly from the French Jacques.
