Guinness Is Actually Good For You!

The old ad slogan "Guinness is good for you" may actually be true: a study showed that drinking just over a pint of Guinness at mealtimes may help reduce the blood's ability to form dangerous clots that may lead to heart attacks.

Drinking lager does not yield the same benefits, experts from University of Wisconsin told a conference in the US.

Guinness were told to stop using the slogan decades ago - and the firm still makes no health claims for the drink.

The Wisconsin team tested the health-giving properties of stout against lager by giving it to dogs who had narrowed arteries similar to those in heart disease.

They found that those given the Guinness had reduced clotting activity in their blood, but not those given lager.

When I started giving blood thirty-odd years ago, the Blood Transfusion Service (as it was then) used to offer tea, coffee, squash and - yes - Guiness! It was only in tiny stubby little cans - 250ml, I guess. I often wondered whether they had them specially made.

My father in law did quality control at the Guiness Brewery in Park Royal. The queue for job applications went round the block.

This is marvellous- I just got to let this read by my wife- Finally I get justice in my household: What I always have maintained about my favorite stout is now scientifically backed up.

Now Bring In the stout!

Similarly, Mackeson Stout was given to women shortly after giving birth...

In the 1950s their slogan was "looks good, tastes good and, by golly, it does you good".

Actually, the anti-clotting effects of alcohol are fairly well-known. I've had two blood clots, and now take a daily dose of sodium warfarin, an anti-coagulant. Because of that, I have to be extremely aware of what I eat and drink; alcohol makes blood thinner, and many foods (including a number of green veggies) make it thicker.
