Science Fiction Toilets

By John Farrier in Film, Science & Tech on Jul 20, 2009 at 7:05 pm

When one of the two toilets on the International Space Station broke, io9 blogger Lauren Davis was inspired to write about the toilets (or utter lack thereof) in various science fiction movies, TV shows, and books.  She rounds up the commodes from Star Trek, Lexx, Babylon 5, Galaxy Quest, Firefly, and others.

Apparently on the Enterprise-D, there was only one toilet, and the post includes a video of Jonathan Frakes pointing it out on a schematic of the ship.

Enterprise-D had only one toilet? For how man crewmen? Just imagine the long lines at the loo!

Didn’t y’all know that the replicators that they get their food from work both directions on Star Trek? They take all waste matter on the ships and convert it into, at first jello jigglers and then in later Enterprises real food. They mention it in passing on one of the cartoon episodes, but in general Gene Roddenberry just assumed everyone would get it (that from an old interview in The Tribble Tribune).

Wrong on one count, anyway. Firefly/Serenity has a shot of Captain Mal taking a whizz. He washes his hands after, too.
