Back in the Sixties, my mother lamented that he days of individuals discovering scientific truths in basement labs were over, Indeed, both my mother and father only worked on big projects with big budgets for big institutions.

Things have swung back, however. I have been able to do quite a bit of work in and around my house on a moderate budget. There is also a growing, home-based biotech movement.

“Remember the scene in the 1997 movie Contact, where the character played by Jodie Foster received signals from outer space? All those antennas are actually real”
Well, not ‘all’ of those antennae are real. Some of then were faked with CG by digital artists at Sony Imageworks. A good example is that too-fast moving antenna behind Jody Foster the first time we see her sitting at the VLA.
