Hm... I didn't know the part about them having similar DNA to a bird. Now that I think about it, platypuses do look like kiwis that evolved to live in water.

I've read (I think in Jerry Coyne's "Why Evolution is True") that the platypus doesn't have a proper stomach. It's pretty much a straight shot to the intestines.

We have platypus on our farm. Echidna too. Theyre fairly common. The playtpus that is. Only 1 or 2 of the Echidna species are common. Always the victim of cars tho, poor little buggers

Nothing, not even this thorough going insight into the Platypius really prepares you for seeing the little buggers up close.

Saw them in the aquarium terrarium at Healseville Sanctuary out side of Melbourne.

Smashing wee guys.

You can use a torch to look at them underwater as they keep their eyes shut underwater.

Well there is the long nosed echidna which is only found in Papua New Guinea so you might be able to stretch it to three. But there aren't any more. This I believe.

You have omitted the single most amazing fact about the platypus. It is one of only two monotremes, that is, a mammal that lays eggs, the other being the echidna.
