410 Pound Weight Loss

Posted by Miss Cellania in Odd News on July 11, 2009 at 12:21 pm

At 650 pounds, David Smith contemplated suicide. But then he decided to lose the weight, and dropped 410 pounds in a little over two years.

“I decided that the best way to get over my fear was to destroy it … and the best way to be seen is on television,” he wrote. So he contacted KTVK, a local television station that had a feature hosted by fitness and nutrition guru Chris Powell. After some initial hesitation, Powell took Smith on.

Now 240 pounds, Smith is a certified trainer. The documentary is called “The 650-pound Virgin” and will air Sunday night on TLC. Link (with video) -via Digg

What a story. Having had problems with my weight all my life I'm both amazed and pleased that he was able to not only take the weight off but keep it off these last two years. Taking the weight off is ultimately the "easy" part. Keeping it off has always eluded me. His story is a real inspiration and I'm sure his mom would be so proud. A pox on all those bullies and misguided cretins of his youth.

I hope that it all works out for him. Others have achieved this, only to fall back into despair as the fat slowly overwhelms them.

That is amazing. I am always so proud of people who decide they're tired of being unhappy and do whatever it takes to change it

Congratulations! I can't even imagine getting the "mind set" to lose this much weight! I have gained and lost the same 30-40 pounds over and over. I have learned there is no cure. It's a day to day struggle. Good luck David. Keep the weight off and BE HAPPY!!

It probably didn't, Ted. He most likely got contact lenses.

Miss C, you know how sometimes questions are rhetorical or not meant to be taken seriously?

no matter what, there will always be people to try to pull you down with negativity. jeez.

good for him. i hope he keeps it up.

Thank goodness. I was afraid I was losing my touch.

emmiline, were there any negative comments here? I think it's great that he lost that weight, but some of it WAS by surgery. They removed excess skin. I wonder how much the skin actually weighed, and if they used it for something else, to be morbidly curious.

They removed 30 pounds of skin so far, and will take more before he's done. I wouldn't be at all surprised if they kept it to use for burn patients or something.

I watched the documentary last night on TLC. He seems like such a sweet guy! I really wish him the best, and I hope whomever he decides to date sees how strong this journey has made him. He is really a catch...

I saw him on Good Morning America. Good story.
I myself used to weigh 22% more than I do now, so I know a bit of what a relief it feels like to be at a normal BMI for once in your life.
