Fatso the Fat-arsed Wombat was the unoffical mascot of the the Sydney olympics. He was hated by the organising committee but loved by everyone else. He became so popular there is now an official statue of him in the olympic village.

I'd find it quite hard to believe that these cute little ones came about by accident - especially the little feature that they have their pouches facing downwards so their little ones don't get 'buried' in dirt just being in their pouches, or their perfect square feces. Someone must have thought hard enough to create them (or any other animal for that matter) that way.

Living in Canberra (the capital city of Australia in case you don't know the name, the reason I've included this is because some geography teachers who shall remain nameless/ignorant... teach that Sydney is the capital..) we see load of Wombats... sadly most are road kill... but I digress...

The strong back is definitely a given.. we have friends in the SES who've actually witnessed car accidents where the poor wombat is pinned under the vehicle, with the majority of the cars weight on the animal.. but when the SES managed to lift the car off the Wombat, it got up and ran off into the bush... so don't mess with a Wombat baby!

We were fortunate enough as kids to have a pet wombat. My mother was a wildlife rescue officer and we would be brought all kinds of injured animals to nurse back to health. "Mrs Wiggles the Wily Wommbat" came into our lives after her mother was killed on the road and she was rescued from the pouch and bottle reared. She lived with us for many years and was a wonderful animal with many amusing character traits. We had to place her with a wildlife sanctuary when we moved from our farm but she lived to a grand old age.
She was fascinated with water and if the bathroom door wasn't securely locked when you had a shower or bath she'd let herself in to join in the fun. We thought it was great fun as kids but it used to alarm any guests who came to stay!
She was very affectionate and loved a scratch. I don't ever recall her biting anyone. It's over 40 years ago now but I miss her and remember her with much fondness.

speaking of Rossetti- the Dormouse in Lewis Carol's Adventures in Wonderland was inspired by Rossetti's wombat.
the wombat didn't live long, more than likely because he let it eat off the dinner table, and do just about whatever it pleased. neat story though.

On a recent trip in southern Victoria, we spied white wombats - not albino. Their colouring is possibly an adaptation to their sand dune environment.

Here's a googled piccie of one:

Those last 2 photos are just too damn cute. Same goes for the first one too. Adorable! I'm sure they are probably mean as hell though... so I'll just admire from afar :D

I had seen em on TV, and such like but it is quite a different matter when you come barrelling round a NSW unsealed road and find one of the big bastards standing like furry boulder in the road.

The big guy held his ground against several tons of early 70 Aussie station wagon, gave me a look of total disdain and shambled of into the bush.

Oh and they like to have a shit on raised things, so if you see a log, check it for wombat crap before sitting down.

Neat until they take your finger off when patting one. Or you take out your front end driving over one, when you go back to look at the 'poor' wombat it has already walked off.

ps: what is neat is that the Northern Hairy-nosed Wombats is up from 113 left to 390. Which means a successful breeding program for a capricious animal.

The Victorian artist/poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti had a real thing for wombats and kept some as pets at his home in London...

O how the family affections combat
Within this heart, and each hour flings a bomb at
My burning soul! Neither from owl nor from bat
Can peace be gained until I clasp my wombat.
    - Dante Gabriel Rossetti, 1869
