Vonskippy - That altitude is the approximation that was mentioned in the final report of the aircrash-investigation.
The fall of 2 miles was based on the hight of the flightpath of the airplane when it was still going, minus the reconstructed dive it took after it was hit towards the point that it disintegrated.
So it wasn't Juliane who knew that she fell for such a distance- She took that distance from what was explained to her afterwards by others.

And like others say- She was the only person of all those passengers plus crew that survived that ordeal.
We will never know if others perhaps also survived their fall, because not all the passengers and crew were found back. But she's clearly the only one that walked out of there and lived to tell.
That in itself is near to impossible- but it happened.

We probably don't have to speculate whether or not she fell 2 miles or 1 mile or what. The fact is she survived an accident which everyone else died in. If you asked survivors of such 'miracles', they'd probably tell you it isn't so much whether it was a miracle or not, but that they were thankful that they actually survived.

How about the girl who fell six miles?

http://www.damninteresting.com/?p=18

January 26, 1972, 22-year-old flight attendant Vesna Vulovic, was on a DC-9 which got blown up by a terrorist group. She was in the tail section of the plane, which fell 30,000+ feet, crashed onto a tree-covered, snow-covered mountainside, she was the only survivor. Severely injured, but she recovered.

The ARTICLE STATES she fell 2 miles - there is NOTHING to substantiate that statement. What part of that is unclear?

//"you've won nothing" - you mean there's prizes?

@ Vonskippy

"Pure conjecture. There are no facts to support it. Most people are notoriously bad at estimating height - especially when their plane breaks apart and they lose consciousness."

She never states she fell 2 miles down. The article states the following:

"Then Koepcke lost consciousness again. She fell more than three kilometers (two miles) into the jungle canopy but miraculously survived with only minor injuries. Ninety-one other people aboard Flight 508 died."

Why do people like you exist? What is the point you are trying to make? You're making a point with incorrect fact... congratulation, you've won NOTHING.

I'm not sure what technology was like back then, but I'm sure it isn't that hard to estimate how high up the plane was when it was broke up, if the pilots were in contact with ground, etc. etc.

I remember watching this movie as a kid on t.v. Not sure if it was theatrically released or if it was made for t.v.

The reason why I remember it so vividly is because there were scenes where she had an infection from some insect bites, and she had to squeeze the worms out of the bites.

Infested with devil rays? That's plain stupid. Devil rays have minute teeth, eat plankton and small fish - not humans.
