Solar Birdhouse

Posted by Miss Cellania in Home & Garden on July 2, 2009 at 11:47 am

Even our fine feathered friends are getting into alternative energy! This birdhouse design from Studio Oooms has a solar panel on the roof, and a translucent perch that lights up at night. The idea is that the light will attract bugs that the bird can feast upon. Genius! Link -via J-Walk Blog

Nesting birds of this size are diurnal. They generally will not be aware to partake of the "feast". It may attract owls looking for a quick easy dinner at night though.

Not very genius...although I see what they were getting at. Might be good for a bat box though.

    If it ain't broke...

I think we hardly need to augment a bird's ability to catch insects (the above comments notwithstanding). Make 'em earn their meals, it's how things run properly. The design, while novel, purports a mentality of needless interference.

I agree! We interfere too much in nature and it's ability to balance itself. Working for a conservation organization, I hear of people meddling daily. It drive me nutso!

Another artsy concept with no practical application.

I make all my birdhouses have remote entry doors with keyless radio fobs. Sure, some birds never seem to remember the 4 digit keycode, but that's not my problem.
