On one hand, The suggested DIY experiments are practical, potentially informative and relatively cheap. On the other hand, the kits are not that much more expensive and come with comprehensive instruction manuals. If one is capable of explaining the electrolysis of water to Hydrogen, then use the homemade experiment. Otherwise, you would be smart to buy the kit. I am of two minds on this article.
