Leonardo da Vinci's Nude Mona Lisa

Posted by Alex in Arts & Crafts on June 14, 2009 at 1:30 pm

Did Leonardo da Vinci paint a nude version of the Mona Lisa? Maybe so, according to a newly revealed painting, hidden for a century within the walls of a private library:

The lady in the portrait does not exactly resemble the original Mona Lisa, but there is little doubt it has parallels with the painting hanging at the Louvre museum in Paris.

"The frontal look, the position of the hands, the spatial conception of the landscape, with columns at the sides, show a clear link with the Mona Lisa’s iconographic theme," Alessandro Vezzosi, director of the museum, told Discovery News.

This painting is in the style of Leonardo, but he was far better with the anatomy. Could have been painted by a student or later follower.

And if this has only been hidden for less than a century, wouldn't the world have already known about it? Something's fishy.

It is absolutely not by Leonardo but the face, right hand and background landscape are very nice.

Wow, I can't see any resemblance in features or painting style.

I'm not saying this was Da Vinci's work, but during the Renaissance, the anatomy of men that featured in paintings and sculptures was usually far better than the anatomy of women. This is because it was illegal to use women as nude models in paintings, and the anatomy of women was never studied in art academies. Michelangelo actually used dudes for his models for women, which is why some of his sculptures of women look like men with tennis balls protruding from their chests:

His representations of women were so far off that some also argue he was gay, and so wouldn't have a great idea of what a nude woman looked like.

I was just looking at a Photoshopped Jennifer Love Hewitt nude. This looks like a primitive version of the same technique.

I'll have to wait for a follow up regarding this to see if it's legit.

    @ Jess
dude, c'mon. Da Vinci was an artist. He would be having an awesome imagination. You talk as if he never slept with a woman.

There are like 20 different paintings that all resemble the mona lisa, and even some nude ones. This was definitely inspired by the mona lisa and da vinci. If it's not him it's gotta be from someone close to him. It looks like it has his "Sfumato" technique, which i describe in my book/site. Itsjustlife.com If you know how to look at it right and control the dilation of your eyes, the painting will change. I wish i had a better quality scan of this painting though to be sure.
