Life Imitates Final Destination: Woman Who Survived Missed Air France Flight 447 Died in Car Crash 2 Weeks Later

Posted by Alex in Car & Vehicle on June 11, 2009 at 8:24 pm

It’s like that movie Final Destination. An Italian woman who didn’t get on Air France flight 447 because she arrived late to the airport was killed in a car crash just two weeks later:

Johanna Ganthaler, a pensioner from Bolzano-Bozen province, had been on holiday in Brazil with her husband Kurt and missed Air France Flight 447 after turning up late at Rio de Janeiro airport on May 31.

All 228 people aboard lost their lives after the plane crashed into the Atlantic four hours into its flight to Paris. [...]

It said that Ms Ganthaler died when their car veered across a road in Kufstein, Austria, and swerved into an oncoming truck. Her husband was seriously injured.

The title is a little misleading. She wasn't on the flight nor did she survive it. She barely missed the flight, which I agree is a lot like Final Destination, but you should be more careful with how you title the articles.

Wow, one would naturally think that anyone who happened to miss that flight would live on forever without any chance of something bad ever happening again... Who knew someone would die from some other cause...

what would be really creepy is if her husband dies later...

It hasn't actually been two weeks yet since the crash, so there's a little mistake...
According to the italian article here http://www.ilgiornale.it/a.pic1?ID=357991 she died on the same day. They landed in Austria, got into a car (their son got into another car), and then had the accident on the way back to Italy. Her husband is still in the hospital.

I see no irony here at all. These are completely different events. They have absolutely nothing to do with each other.

Our brains are wired to look for patterns, even when they don't exist. This brings up the fallacy of "fate". This bizarre fixation towards "fate" blocks us from reality.

What is reality? We will all die one day. There is no pattern. There is no "meaning". Our bodies are very fragile. One day, they will simply give out, or something happens to interrupt vital bodily processes.

Is this "depressing"? I don't think so. Depression doesn't stop something from happening, so why embrace it? Truth is, if one accepts this reality, they can let go their fear and the illusions this fear brings.

I like this, it is interesting, I don't know why some people don't but it's interesting and don't stop posting random/neat stories like this because people have issues.

Condolences to the family. Whether it was her time or not, she's gone and someone out there is grieving. Car accidents are so sad.

It is sad that someone is out there grieving for the death of this woman, and my sincerest condolences go out to her family. We should realize that if it isnt ur time, it isnt your time. But when it is, there is nothing that you can do it about, but hope that you have done well enough to have a beautiful afterlife. It is more important how you live your life than how you die... Remember to treat those you love like you love them, you never know when you may never pass their way again.

    Peace n Blessings!
