Twitter Treasure Hunt

Posted by Miss Cellania in Blogs & Internet on June 3, 2009 at 8:36 pm

Anthony Gardiner of Wellington, New Zealand bought an engagement ring for his girlfriend, but she turned him down. He can’t return the ring and doesn’t want to keep it as he considers it bad luck, so he’s staging a treasure hunt!

Anyone keen to pick up the ring, valued at NZ$5,000 ($3,268), will need to be in New Zealand’s capital city, Wellington, on Saturday to join the hunt, the Dominion Post newspaper reported.

Clues to the ring’s whereabouts will start being posted on social networking site Twitter (http:/twitter.com/donoogle_com) at 8 a.m. local time on Saturday (2000 GMT on Friday).

(YouTube link)

Harrison Ford has it all over Tom Selleck, if you ask me. If you are too young to remember Magnum, P.I. then you may not realize how closely this mashup follows the original opening sequence. So watch this side-by-side comparison.

Atlas Obscura

Posted by Miss Cellania in Travel on June 3, 2009 at 7:05 pm

The founders of Curious Expeditions and the defunct Athanasius Kircher Society have teamed up to start a new website called Atlas Obscura, “A Compendium of the This Age’s Wonders, Curiosities and Esoterica.” or in simpler terms a guide to world’s most unusual places. Users are invited to suggest odd places and add to information about existing entries. Many of the weird and wonderful places you’ve read about on Neatorama are listed. The example pictured is the Kindlifresser, or “Child Eater” of Bern, Switzerland.

The disturbing sculpture is no modern work of art, built in 1546, it is one of the oldest fountains in the city of Bern.

Strangely, no one is exactly sure why it’s there. There are three main theories.

There are 277 strange places already listed, which gives me a lot to read about! Link -Thanks, D!

The History Of Coiffure In The XVIII Century

Posted by Miss Cellania in Fashion on June 3, 2009 at 10:36 am

Hairstyles in the 18th century were regimented, over-the-top, and difficult to achieve, especially for women. The styles calmed down a little mid-century, but that didn’t last long.

However somewhere from mid 70-ies the hairstyle started “growing up” again. It emerged into a complex structure and was was as high and unimaginable as ever before. Ingenious women used almost everything they could find to make their headdress ,including most popular belts, jewelry, fabrics, flowers, fruit. Of course, their own hair was not enough to make such a piece of art and they used the hair of their servants and even the horse’s mane.

Soft Drink, Hard Quiz

Posted by Miss Cellania in Food & Drink on June 3, 2009 at 10:33 am

Three US soft drink companies own more brand names than you probably were aware of. In today’s Lunchtime Quiz at mental_floss, you are given eleven soda names. Can you identify whether it is a product of Coca-Cola, Pepsico, or Dr Pepper/Snapple? I failed this quiz miserably, probably because I don’t drink soda pop. Give me another cup of coffee! Link

Don’t let my daughter see this or I’d have to fly the Princess in for her next birthday party … Link – via J-Walk Blog

Machine Keeps Heart Beating Outside of Body

Posted by Alex in Health, Science & Tech, Video Clips on June 3, 2009 at 7:16 am

Researchers at the North Carolina State University has developed a machine that can keep a heart beating outside the body. The potential medical benefit is huge, though for whatever reason I kept on thinking about Dr. Frankenstein:

"Researchers can obtain pig hearts from a pork processing facility and use the system to test their prototypes or practice new surgical procedures," says Andrew Richards, a Ph. D. student in mechanical engineering at NC State who designed the heart machine.

The computer-controlled machine, which operates using pressurized saline solution, also allows researchers to film the interior workings of the pumping heart – enabling them to ascertain exactly which surgical technologies and techniques perform best for repairing heart valves.

Who knows why the Department of Public Works in Madrid drilled these holes in the asphalt of the same street as the year before – but one thing we do know: they set the stage for urban street art team Luzinterruptus’ art installation "Luminous Craters."

Popular and Unique Soft Drinks From Around the World – Part 2

Posted by Queuebot in Food & Drink on June 3, 2009 at 6:22 am

This is part 2 to the soft drinks from around the world that was published earlier. Makes me miss Moxie and Vernors.

Vegitabeta. VegitaBeta is an orange-colored soft drink consisting primarily of water and sugar. The product contains 3mg of beta-carotene per 100ml serving; an entire bottle contains 4.8mg. Although the product contains less than 10% juice, the label is filled with pictures of vegetables such as carrots, and fruits such as oranges, apples, acerola, and, prunes that naturally contain beta-carotene. The label states “Easy way to obtain nutrition,” “VegitaBeta is a health-supporting drink that uses five materials [vegetables and fruits].” The beverage carries the trade mark “Daily Care” with an explanation that “Daily Care is a symbol of products that support a healthy lifestyle.” While VegitaBeta contains a small amount of juice from vegetables and fruits that contain beta-carotene, the 4.8 mg of beta carotene in one bottle of the beverage is added in supplement form according to company officials.

19 Reasons to Take a Nap

Posted by Queuebot in Everything Else on June 3, 2009 at 12:01 am

As if you need that many reasons to take a snooze.

Studies show that not only will you feel better almost immediately, says Sara Mednick, PhD, a sleep medicine researcher at the University of California at San Diego and author of Take a Nap! Change Your Life, but a daily nap of between 20 and 90 minutes before 4:00 pm will also increase your mental performance, reduce your chances of gaining weight, and make you feel a whole lot more like having sex after dinner than you probably do now. What’s more, it won’t affect your nighttime sleep.
