I loved all the Mary Poppins books when I was a young girl, and I love the movie!!! It doesn't matter if it strays a lot from the books - it's magical, and it's perfect!!!

I used to work in the Crecent in London where the movie was filmed. The railings were still in place as was the plaque on the wall

I'm kind of glad they left a scene from the book out of the movie: the scene where Mary takes them to the sweet shop that's run by the little old lady and her two giant daughters, and the little old lady SNAPS OFF TWO OF HER OWN FINGERS and gives them to Jane and Michael, and they're barley sugar. That part gave me the major willies as a kid.

My brother worked and Disney World for about 12 years, and for part of that time he was a driver on the monorail. He told me that the system that controls the monorail is called MaPo -- Ma(ry) Po(ppins). The reason is because profits from that movie were used to fund the original monorail. The system has been upgraded numerous times, but still has the original name.

If you like the movie you will probably love the live musical.

I saw it twice, once in NYC, and again recently in Chicago. The production is pretty remarkable - and the Step in Time number is a riot. Bert literally dances around the stage - up the side, across the top upside down and back down again. Sure it's on wires but it takes nothing away from the sheer fun of it all.

Lots of show stoppers - Supercalifragilisticexpialidoceous is another wild number. And when Mary floats out over the audience into the balcony you will want to come back and see the show again.

I too absolutely dislike this movie. Dick Van Dyke is at best an overblown "Ham", his attempt at an English accent a horrible, laughable failure. Most of the other characters are over acted, the entire thing coming off as a live action cartoon, a cartoon which thinks very highly of itself in spite of how bad it actually is. I don't like either of the two kids, I remember thinking them "creepy" when I saw the Gnome Mobile as a kid. HowEVER...... I DO very much like one song from Mary Poppins. A Spoonful of Sugar Makes the Medicine go down.... My Mother used to sing that whenever we had colds and needed medicine. It became a little ritual within the family and yes, if our throats weren't too terribly sore, we'd get the spoonful of sugar as well.

Next time you watch the movie, check out the queue of nannies lined up to interview for the nanny position - a bunch of them are actually men.

oh wow- this is the perfect blog for my family. my four year old is obsessed with mary poppins. we love the dvd and the commentary. my favorite story is the whole part about the feed the birds song. I guess it was walt's all time favorite. he had the composer play it for him privately in his office regularly. he tells a story of a time when he was playing it live at disneyland and little bird came and sat on the piano. he was sure that it was walt disney smiling from heaven.

I read that when P.L. Travers finally gave Walt Disney permission to adapt "Mary Poppins" for the screen, she also gave him permission to call her "P.L." rather than "Mrs. Travers." "Please, call me 'P.L.'" she said. Sometime later, she visited the States to see how production was coming along. She was appalled at how far Walt had strayed from her vision of Mary Poppins. When he arrived and greeted her with, "Hello, P.L.!", she coldly replied, "Please, call me 'Mrs. Travers.'"
