Breathing Xenon

Posted by Miss Cellania in Science & Tech on May 27, 2009 at 6:04 am

Xenon {wiki} is the heaviest non-radioactive noble gas. It affects your voice like sulphur hexafluoride (previously at Neatorama) and can get you high like nitrous oxide (laughing gas). Don’t try this at home; just watch these guys breathe it. Link (embedded YouTube clip)

while not easy to get your hands on, breathing noble gasses, especially heavy ones is incredibly dangerous. It doesn't get you high like nitrous oxide, it gets you high like huffing paint - it displaces oxygen. It is ridiculously dangerous.

It is my understanding that due to its potency Xenon gas can be used in lower concentrations than N2O making it a considerably safer anaesthetic. I'm no expert mind but its use in medicine is increasing. Everything is dangerous in the hands of idiots... now wheres my xenon filled lamp ;o)

Well, other than the danger factor....
    That was freakin hilarious.
Love it when their voice gets all deep b/c it's like they're talking in slowmo hehe

Yeah, agreed. I wouldn't mind if experts did this but these idiots don't seem to know what they are talking about. Laughing gas is N2O not NO2. And secondly, just by judging the size of the balloon, that was way too much.

I'll need just enough to make an answering machine message.

That can't have been cheap, xenon is a rare noble gas and costs on the order of dollars per liter. It's probably as bad for you as huffing lens cleaner which is a heavy fluorocarbon.

drew12, yeah that probably cost like $4 or something. Don't even ask me how I know that. Oh, okay, I confess - I watched the video.
