Orangutan Attempts Escape

By Queuebot in Animal on May 16, 2009 at 10:22 am

No one can deny that this Adelaide, South Australia, orangutan is smart. She managed to deliberately short circuit an electric fence with a stick, and was building a mound out of grass and sticks in the ditch in order to get to the second electric fence.

She has been previously known (I saw it) to get into electrified areas of  her enclosure (they were being protected to let plants grow) by a complex plan of jumping from trees and down support wires.

This recent escape attempt resulted in the evacuation of the Zoo on Mother’s Day.

“This animal has a history of trying to outsmart and be a little bit smarter, and she’s an animal which has caused lots of keepers a lot of late hours,” he said.

That's just silly. Why would anyone want to escape from a zoo?

Has it not occurred to anyone at this zoo that she needs more space, things to keep her interested and busy. Zoos are so sad. Animals should not be kept in captivity for human entertainment.

Adelaide Zoo is really nice, and always gives the animals 'toys' and things to figure out (and they change them on a regular basis), and the orangutan has trees, ropes, climbing frames, and quite a large enclosure. That photo shows only one corner of it.

I don't believe it's for human entertainment either, (even though they're good to look at/funny sometimes), they're there for conservation purposes, and for human education purposes.

Just put the animal behind bars.

I've never liked zoos much, but if they're having problems with an animal, they should be trying to protect it from injury first.
