Top 10 Incredible Audio Recordings Throughout History

Posted by Queuebot in World Records on May 13, 2009 at 1:23 pm

Sound recordings still available to us go back as far as 1878. In this collection at Listverse, you’ll find historical recordings of Florence Nightingale, Pope Leo XIII, and other audio firsts.

One of the strangest ones is the recording of castrato Alessandro Moreschi, a man castrated as a boy to keep his singing voice from changing during puberty (featured previously at Neatorama).

Other recordings listed in the article include an exorcism, the recording of the 1978 killings in Jonestown, and even the Sounds of Hell (yes, it’s a hoax, but quite interesting).

These recordings crack me up as it seems that people used a special voice for public speaking and early media.

I listened to the Jonestown recording. Jim Jones is a psychopath, i think. His way of talking to the people and coercing them to do what he wants should be studied by psych majors. Total freakyness!

Oh yeah, we had a good listen of these links at a party once. It was so fascinating.

DaveL- Most likely, but you'll find that people speak more formally when public speaking even now. And from people's research, speech patterns were a lot different back then as were desired voices.

I always wanted to read about the Sounds From Hell. My school mates used to talk (in 1996) about it
