After lying dormant for centuries, Mont Pelee began to erupt in April 1902. Assured that there was no danger, the residents of the main city, St Pierre, stayed in their homes and were there when, at 7.30 a.m. on 8 May, the volcano burst apart and showered the port with molten lava, ash and gas, destroying virtually all life and property. Among the survivors was Louis-Auguste Sylbaris, a prisoner in the St Pierre jail, who later joined Barnum and Bailey·s circus as· The Amazing Survivor of Mont Pelee.

Informative list. There is one other that probably ranks with these though: the Atlantis supervolcano eruption and tsunami off the coast of Portugal ca. 1640 BC. The death toll, of course, is hard to estimate, but must have been in the scores of thousands (See Roots of Cataclysm, Algora Publ.2009).

I’m from New Zealand and I’ve never heard of Mt Tambora. Mt Tarawera on the other hand… Also, Ruapehu gets hot every couple of years.. no biggie

Toba, the super-volcano, was by far the most deadly eruption that we know of. It occurred 70-75,000 yrs ago and almost wiped-out the human race.

There have been much larger volcanoes. For example, the one that formed the Yellowstone caldera. Others in Siberia were even larger.

Some time ago I’ve seen Gunung Merapi and some other Indonesian volcanoes and Vesuvius in Italy. The Indonesian ones were at the time that I saw them, gently speaking giants, with burps of gas and some fire, lava and rumbles. Vesuvius was just breathing a bit and raising its flanks a bit and smelling bad in some places.

But even in those states, they put the Absolute Fear of Mother Earth into me.

Re: lahars. Here in Washington state, towns near potential volcano Mt. Rainer have “lahar alarms” and conduct practice drills getting to high ground; if the mountain ever blows, some places have like 15 or 30 minutes to get out of the way..

New Zealand is still pretty crazy when it comes to volcanos, and it looks like Mount Ruapehu is starting to act up again. I heard from my sister who lives there that they also expect a new volcano in the future, they just don’t know where exactly it’s going to pop up.
